OPITO RIGGER COMPETENCE ASSESSMENT

This 2-Day Rigger Competence Assessment (previously named Stage 3) Training Course is designed to assess and certify the competence of riggers in the energy industry.

It aims to ensure that riggers have the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and effectively use lifting equipment and accessories in their role.

DATES

Courses are run every week on a Thursday and Friday.

08h00 – 17h30 hours each day.
You will receive short breaks throughout the course.

Course Information

Who is the course for?

This course is for learners who wish to become OPITO certified competent riggers, having successfully completed the OPITO Rigger Initial Training Standard and Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook or possess sufficient and relevant work experience to be eligible for the OPITO Rigger Competence Assessment.

What does this course cover?

This course aims to establish that the learner has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to fulfil the role of Rigger safely and effectively.

Course Entry Requirements

Learners must possess and produce one of the following three evidence options to be submitted to ITC before arriving at the training centre:

OPTION 1

  • A valid OPITO approved Rigger Initial Training Certificate awarded within the previous 32 months.
    *and*
  • A fully completed and valid OPITO Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook and supporting evidence for each of the 50 tasks*, such as a copy of the lifting plan, permit or toolbox, based on the OPITO Rigger Initial Training Standard and Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook requirements. The logbook must be signed as true and valid by the employing company head of discipline or the employing company discipline manager and confirmed by the centre as being present and correct prior to assessment taking place.*Supporting evidence is not required for learners who completed the Initial Training Standard (previously Stage 1) between February 29th, 2020, and February 28th, 2022.
    *or*
  • If a learner completed the Rigger Initial Training Standard (previously Stage 1) between 1st November 2021 and 30th November 2023, a fully completed and valid OPITO Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook and supporting evidence for each of the 10 tasks, such as a copy of the lifting plan, permit or toolbox talk, based on the OPITO Rigger Initial Training Standard and Rigger Workplace Experience Logbook requirements.The logbook must be signed as true and valid by the employing company head of discipline or the employing company discipline manager and confirmed by the centre as being present and correct prior to assessment taking place.

OPTION 2

An OPITO Approved Rigger Competence Assessment or Re-Assessment Certificate awarded with the previous 30 months.

OPTION 3

Evidence that you have been assessed as competent and have achieved an equivalent qualification / certification by a nationally recognised awarding body, awarded within the previous 30 months.

Please note that after two years the certificate would no longer be valid.

NOTE:

Learners who possess an OPITO Rigger Assessment or Re-Assessment Certificate which has expired by more than 6 months will be required to attend the OPITO Rigger Initial Training prior to undertaking the Rigger Competence Assessment. In these instances, there will be no requirement to complete a Work Experience Logbook.

Medical Entry Requirements

Training activities contained within this course may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements.

All individuals who participate in such activities must be capable of participating fully.

Physical

Elements of the course may be physically demanding and some activities, such as lifting operations, carry some risk. Participants will be asked to complete a medical disclaimer form prior to the course commencing.

Medically Fit

All participants must be declared fit to ensure that prior to engaging in practical exercises they possess an employing company-approved medical certificate equivalent to an offshore medical certificate or they must complete a medical screening form provided by ITC.

Proof of Identity

You will be required to bring an original government-issued photographic identity document such as your ID, passport or drivers license in addition to details of your emergency contact.

Outcomes

Outcome 1: Preparation for lifting and moving of loads
Outcome 2: The Lifting, moving, lowering and landing of a load

The course is comprised of two parts:

UNIT 1 OIS-202

Knowledge assessment (OIS-202 – Plan, Prepare, Lift and Move Loads – Theory).

The Knowledge Assessment comprises a written test of which the pass mark is 80%.

UNIT 2 OIS-200

Practical assessment (OIS-200 – Plan, Prepare, Lift and Move Loads – Practical).

The learner will be expected to carry out two rigging and lifting operations for their assessment, where they will be expected to lead the rigging and lifting operations.

Certification

OPITO Certificate of Competence

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded an OPITO certificate of competence.

The certificate is valid for two years.

Accommodation

Dorm-style accommodation is provided for free on site which is available on a first-come first-served basis.

Meals (breakfast & dinner)

  1. Meals can be ordered from an on-site menu
  2. Meals can be ordered from a local restaurant and collected
  3. There is a self-catering kitchen on-site if you wish to cook for yourself

Travel Arrangements

Closest Airport

The closest airport is George.

For candidates travelling by bus from other areas, i.e. Gauteng, Mpumalanga or Eastern Cape, we provide a free pickup service from the Plettenberg Bay bus station during daylight hours.

You will need to confirm your arrival times with us the week before training.

Shuttle Information

• We now provide a free shuttle to and from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay every week. The shuttle will depart from the Shell petrol station @ The Angolan Embassy in Cape Town @ 0930 hours on Sunday morning. Please ensure to be at the collection point by 0900 hours.

• We will also pick up candidates at fuel stations along the N2 from Caledon to Knysna between 1200 and 1600 hours

• The shuttle will return to Cape Town on a Friday afternoon

• The shuttle is available on a first come first served basis

• If you are flying to George airport please try to arrive after 1400 hours on Sunday and we shall collect between 1400 – 1600 hours for free

• For international travel, if you are flying into South Africa please fly to Cape Town and arrive on Saturday. Make your own accommodation booking for the Saturday and travel arrangements to the shuttle pickup point on Sunday morning.

  1. Our driver can take you into town every Tuesday and Thursday. This service is provided free of charge.
  2. We provide a duck feather duvet to ensure you stay warm at night and a towel. Please ensure you bring toiletries.
  3. The weather in Plettenberg Bay can get quite cold, so please bring WARM CLOTHES.
  4. The accommodation is on the same premises as the training venue.
  5. We provide kitchen facilities (fridge, microwave, kettle and gas cooker).
  6. Please ensure that you bring comfortable clothes to train in.
